Whether it’s your first Christmas without your loved one, or they died many years ago, you might find that your grief is heightened during the festive period.
During times when families and friends traditionally come together, we are reminded of happy moments, but we also feel the absence of those we have lost. Our support services are here to help you cope with grief and loss, as well as bring you together with others who understand what you’re going through.
- Acknowledge your feelings
It’s important to remember that there is no “right” way to feel during the festive season. While others may be celebrating, you might be experiencing a range of emotions, from sadness and anger to guilt or even moments of happiness.
All these feelings are valid and acknowledging them can be the first step in coping with your grief.
- Embrace new traditions
The holidays are often filled with traditions, but when a loved one is no longer there, familiar traditions may feel too painful to continue. It can help to adapt or create new ones in their memory.
Whether it’s lighting a candle in honour of your loved one, reflecting quietly or with others, or visiting their favourite place. Finding a meaningful way to remember them can bring comfort.
- Reach out for support
Grief can feel incredibly isolating, especially when it seems like everyone around you is filled with festive cheer.
Don’t be afraid to reach out for support, whether it’s from friends and family, a support group or a counsellor. At City Hospice, bereavement counselling and support is available to anyone in Cardiff experiencing grief and loss.
- Taking care of yourself
Amid the hustle and bustle of the holidays, it’s easy to neglect self-care, especially when grieving. Be kind to yourself and make time for activities that bring you comfort and peace. Eating well, staying hydrated, and getting enough sleep are also important.
- Give yourself time
Grieving during the festive season is hard, and it’s important to give yourself time to process your emotions. Christmas can bring up memories and feelings that may be difficult to face, but there is no timeline for grief. Be gentle with yourself.
