Helen has been a nurse for ten years and recently joined the City Hospice team as a Clinical Nurse Specialist. As a City Hospice nurse, she visits patients in their communities and homes throughout Cardiff, ensuring each patient is given the care they need.
Helen said: “As a City Hospice nurse, we see patients at the most difficult time of their lives. With palliative care we have only one shot at getting it right. This is why we try our hardest to meet the individual caring needs of each patient.”
“We help them having a say in their own final days, trying to give them the best care possible, which is one of the most rewarding things for me.”
Although end of life care is a City Hospice nurse’s main role, Helen says it is more than just that. As nurses meet patients early on, often very soon after a diagnosis, they embark on a journey with both the patient and their loved ones, tailoring the frequency and type of care to the individual’s own needs.
Helen said: “Throughout this journey it really is all about them and their wishes. This is the hardest of times for people, as they deal with their diagnosis and the development of their condition. In our role, we are able to support them through this difficult period and use our expertise to help patients and their families make changes so they can have the best quality of life together with the time they have left.”
