Whilst Christmas is a time of joy, togetherness and celebration, for people with the reality of a life-limiting illness, this time of year can feel different.

Festive cheer and family traditions that once brought comfort can be overwhelming and emphasise uncertainty. We’ve put together a few ways to navigate the festive season we hope might help.

  • Change your traditions

Christmas doesn’t have to look the way it always has. Think about simplifying celebrations or making new traditions that feel manageable and meaningful. A small gathering, sharing favourite memories, or even quiet evenings listening to music or watching a film can be special.

  • Prioritise your wellbeing

Your physical and emotional needs come first. Pace yourself, accept help from family and friends, and try to avoid feeling guilty for choosing to rest or saying no or not now.

  • Stay connected

Whether in person or by telephone or online, make time to connect with family, friends or other support networks. Staying in touch can bring both comfort and a sense of belonging. Sharing how you are feeling with others can ease loneliness or isolation.

  • Focus on smaller moments

Rather than the pressure of perfection, focus on what truly matters, like laughter, shared memories, or simply being present.

  • Seek support

You don’t have to face this season alone. Our skilled teams are here to provide support in the run up to Christmas and during the holidays. You can find out more by chatting to your City Hospice nurse or getting in touch with our day hospice and wellbeing services team.

Remember Christmas doesn’t have to be all or nothing – even when things feel different, there can be moments of warmth, connection, and reflection. Embracing what feels right for you, rather than what is expected, can bring peace.

If you or your loved one needs support during the festive period, City Hospice is here for you. Please get in touch.
