Two #HospiceHeroes Take on a Year of Challenges to Support City Hospice

Leon Gorman and Libby Jervis, two passionate fundraisers, have embarked on an ambitious 12-month charity challenge to raise £10,000 for City Hospice. Through endurance events and community fundraisers, they are demonstrating their dedication to supporting Cardiff’s local hospice.

Leon kicked off the challenge series in September with a five-day, unaided cycle from London to Amsterdam. Facing harsh weather, mechanical issues, and injuries, Leon and his four friends—Callum, Louis, Dan, and Tyler—cycled 500km across four countries.

In October, both Leon and Libby pushed their limits by completing the Cardiff Half Marathon, their longest runs to date. November saw Leon take on the Gower Trail Half Marathon. Despite minimal preparation, he tackled the 21km course, which included an additional 3km and hundreds of stairs along the rugged Gower coastline.

Over the festive season, Libby and Leon hosted a charity bingo night with a fun twist in their hometown of Cowbridge. The event was a huge success raising close to £2,500 through ticket sales, a raffle and other fundraising activities.

Looking ahead to the new year, their year includes even greater challenges, another hosted event and they’ll conclude their efforts with the Inca Trail trek in Peru. This final challenge, organised by City Hospice, will unite a team of fundraisers in celebration of their collective achievements.

Although neither Leon nor Libby has personally experienced City Hospice’s care, they are deeply inspired by the charity’s mission to provide compassionate end of life care. “We know the importance of supporting local charities,” they explained, adding that they’ve been regular donors to City Hospice and other causes.

Their connection with the hospice was strengthened after being formally introduced to City Hospice’s Corporate Partnerships Manager, Nicky Piper through Alun Leach’s Brecon Beacons monthly net-walking days. These experiences further solidified their commitment to the charity’s vital work.

“We want to push our limits to help those who need it most” Leon and Libby shared. They encourage everyone to join their mission, whether by attending an event, cheering them on, or donating.
