On 24th March 2019 the Sterio Family, from Ely, will put their best feet forward at Wag This Way in aid of City Hospice.

The 5k dog walk, sponsored by Burns Pet Nutrition, Heath Vets and Dog Furiendly, will take place in Bute Park, Cardiff to raise money for Cardiff’s local hospice.

The family are taking part as they want to ‘give something back’ after the hospice provided care for a close friend and family members.

Margaret’s Grandson, Thomas, said “We have a lot of connections to City Hospice; my Grandfather sadly passed away last year. The hospice organised and put things in place for him so that he could live the remainder of his life at my Aunt’s so he was more settled. Me and my partner Paul also lost a very dear friend a year ago last January. He suffered for a long time with cancer and sadly lost his battle but the hospice helped him to cope and put things in place to look after his care until he went into Holme Towers in Penarth.”

City Hospice is currently helping Thomas’ Grandmother, Margaret. Margaret was diagnosed with Corticobasal Degeneration (CBD) or Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP). City Hospice nurse, Cath, began visiting her around two years ago to help with her symptoms and to support the family.

“City Hospice helped Nan to come home from hospital right in time for Christmas. The hospice Occupational Therapist, Rachel, arranged the equipment we needed at home to look after Nan’s needs.”

Paul, Thomas’ partner, said “At times you don’t know which direction to go in. It feels like you’re stuck at traffic lights and you’re not sure where to go, so it’s nice to have a helping hand from Cath and the team. We also work in a care home so it’s nice just to give something back and do something like this. We work for Romilly Nursing Home who are donating money to our walk too.”

There is a total of six family members taking part, as well as their long-haired chihuahua, Ralph! They want to give something back as a group and Margaret is getting involved too.

“Nan is doing the walk with us in her wheelchair. She just wants to say a big thank you to City Hospice for all they’ve done for us.”
