At City Hospice our mission is to care for people with incurable illness in their own homes. We help patients stay symptom free and support them and their families so that they can live life to the fullest and make the most of every day.

The easiest way to support patients and families in Cardiff is by volunteering, or ‘acts of kindness’, as I like to think of them. We have a team of over 300 generous individuals that support the work of City Hospice each year by giving their time to support patients and their families.

On the surface, volunteering on our reception desk might seem like a simple task – answering the phone and greeting visitors – but it’s so much more than that. It’s receiving donations from the public with gratitude. It’s welcoming an elderly patient to our day centre with a warm smile and a familiar face. It’s offering a cup of tea to a recently bereaved husband arriving for his first counselling session.

And in our seven shops it’s the same thing. It’s giving the same level of service to our customers as we do our patients. It’s showing compassion to the recently bereaved wife who’s donating her husband’s suits to raise funds because we supported them during his last few weeks. It’s championing the work of the hospice to the customers that come through the door so they know how their donations help.

It’s these acts of kindness, caring, and compassion that really make a difference to those patients and families in our communities. And the best bit about volunteering? All it costs is time.

We’ve got volunteer drivers, bringing patients to appointments, shop staff, office admin and event volunteers. We’ve got dedicated people doing amazing things, all of which take time. We can’t tell you how grateful we are to them.
