City Hospice, Cardiff’s local hospice, was officially re-opened by Cabinet Secretary for Health and Social Services, Vaughan Gething AM, after a £150,000 refurbishment to update and modernise the hospice centre.
We decided on the refurbishment in order to improve the visitor experience for patients and their families. The improvements, made possible by a generous grant from The Hodge Foundation, include the updating of counselling, therapy and day rooms as well as the reception area at the hospice. The aim was to create a brighter, more welcoming space for those visiting and in turn, make it a nicer place to be in.
In 2017/18, City Hospice saw around 90 new patients every month and around 2,500 service users visited the hospice during that time. We hold a number of groups and sessions at the hospice for those with life limiting illnesses such as Motor Neurone Disease (MND) and Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD). We also hold day centres for patients and carers to do a number of activities, bereavement coffee mornings and children’s bereavement groups.
Liz Andrews, our Chief Executive, is delighted with the centre’s new facilities and hopes that the local community will be able to benefit from them. “We’re so proud of this essential service designed especially for the people of Cardiff. The refurbishment has been a big investment and will ensure that we’re able to provide our patients and families with a truly modern and holistic space. As Cardiff’s leading charity, we were built on the goodwill of local people and have been a part of the local community for the last 34 years. We want to continue to help this local community and thanks to generous grants from some amazing organisations, we can keep doing so.”
We changed our name from George Thomas Hospice Care to City Hospice in August 2017.
