City Hospice, Cardiff’s local hospice, has been given the silver gilt award by Wales in Bloom for its memory gardens.

The charity entered the competition for the third year in a row and has been recognised in the ‘Health & Social Care Establishments’ category.

Jim Goodwin, Chairman of Wales in Bloom said “It’s great to see City Hospice receiving recognition for the hard work of the volunteer gardeners that dedicate their time to making the gardens a remarkable place for patients and their families to be. This year, the charity was only three marks away from receiving the gold award which they should be really proud of.”

City Hospice sees around 90 new patients every month and in 2017/18 around 2,500 service users visited the hospice. Many of these visitors spend their time in the gardens where they can sit and have some time to themselves.

Liz Andrews, Chief Executive of City Hospice, would like to thank the volunteer gardeners for their hard work in making the hospice gardens such a peaceful and inspiring place to be. “We’re so lucky that we have this amazing space to offer our patients and families who walk through our doors. We’re even more lucky to have a special group of individuals who take the time to maintain this beautiful area for those who really need it. As we provide palliative care to the whole of Cardiff, being able to offer this fantastic outside space is essential”.

City Hospice, formerly George Thomas Hospice Care, is always on the lookout for volunteer gardeners who can continue to ensure the memory gardens are maintained to a high standard.
