Charlie’s Haircut Challenge: A Bold Move for a Great Cause
A remarkable act of generosity and bravery has helped raise funds for City Hospice and two other vital charities. Charlie, from Cardiff, made the decision to cut off his long hair—something that had been an integral part of his identity—in order to make a meaningful difference in the lives of others.
A Personal Challenge with a Big Impact
“For as long as I can remember, my long hair has been a part of me,” says Charlie. “But recently, I started to think about how something I take for granted could mean so much more to someone else. That’s when I decided to cut it all off, donate it, and raise money for three incredible charities.”
Charlie set himself a goal: to chop nearly all his hair off in the second week of January, opting for a buzz cut to maximise the donation length. He donated his hair to The Little Princess Trust, which provides wigs for children and young adults who have lost their hair due to cancer or other conditions. At the same time, he aimed to raise £300 to be equally divided between City Hospice, Marie Curie, and The Little Princess Trust.
Why City Hospice?
City Hospice played a crucial role in Charlie’s family journey. His Nan was diagnosed with secondary breast cancer that had moved to the brain, and during this challenging time, City Hospice provided invaluable medical and emotional support.
“When my Nan needed hospice care, City Hospice was there for us,” Charlie explains. “Their nurses offered expert care and unwavering compassion—not just for my Nan, but for our whole family. Even when my Nan was at the Marie Curie hospice, we could always reach out to City Hospice for anything we needed. One nurse in particular, Kathrine, was an incredible support, and we can’t thank her enough.”
City Hospice’s dedication extended beyond medical care. Their counselling services provided crucial support to Charlie’s mum and brother, helping them through their grief and offering them comfort in a difficult time.
Encouraging Others to Get Involved
Charlie’s fundraising challenge has not only raised money but also inspired others. He encourages anyone considering a fundraising initiative to go for it, highlighting that there are many ways to support charities.
“A lot of people want to help but don’t always know how,” Charlie says. “It’s about finding something that feels right for you—whether it’s a charity run, a bake-off with friends and family, or even cutting your hair like I did. Seeing the support from loved ones gave me confidence and made me realise how many people want to get involved.”
Charlie originally set a target of £300 and was thrilled to reach his goal within a week. He split the funds equally between the three charities, ensuring that each organisation could continue their vital work.
Katie Vaughan, Senior Community Fundraiser, said,
“City Hospice is incredibly grateful for Charlie’s generosity, courage, and kindness. His inspiring challenge has helped raise awareness and support for families facing life-limiting illnesses.”
