Cardiff’s local hospice, City Hospice, has invited schools from across the city to take part in the Garden of Memories, a special art initiative that will showcase pupils’ collaborative artwork during the Forever Flowers display at Cardiff Castle.
Returning for its fifth year, the popular campaign will once again transform Cardiff Castle with a striking floral display from 2 to 10 August. This year’s Forever Flower is the daffodil, Wales’ national flower, representing hope, resilience and new beginnings.
The Garden of Memories project encourages Key Stage 2 children to explore the themes of remembrance, care and community through art. Their creative designs, whether a tribute to a loved one, or a representation of someone who provides care, will feature in a commemorative book at the Forever Flowers display, bringing young voices into a city-wide moment of reflection and celebration.
Participating schools include Birchgrove Primary, Busy Bees Llandaff City Nursery, Howell’s School, Meadowbank Primary, Roath Park Primary, St Bernadette’s Primary, St Joseph’s RC Primary, St Monica’s Primary, Ton-Yr-Ywen Primary, and Whitchurch High School – Ty Calon.
Mac Smith, Fundraising and Events Manager at City Hospice, said: “We’re delighted to collaborate with schools across Cardiff on the Garden of Memories project. The children’s artwork will add a heartfelt, personal touch to the Forever Flowers display, honouring those we’ve lost while celebrating the strength and compassion of our community. It’s wonderful to see the younger generation expressing creativity in such a meaningful way in support of our charity.”
Meadowbank Primary has previously supported the charity through its Rudolph Run event and pupils will now be taking part in the Garden of Memories project in support of Forever Flowers.
Jenna Powell, Assistant Headteacher at Meadowbank Primary School, said: “As a school, we strive to create an environment where our children and families feel that they belong. We do this by building relationships built on care, trust and understanding. We love working alongside and supporting City Hospice. We feel that the work they do is so important to patients and their families, and they do so with the care and understanding that we hold as such important values.”
Forever Flowers supports the work of City Hospice, the only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in Cardiff. The charity provides care and a wide range of services including welfare advice and complementary therapies to patients with terminal or life limiting illnesses, as well as bereavement support and counselling for the families of its patients.
Forever Flowers is sponsored by Rogers Jones Auctioneers and supported by Cardiff Rugby, Eversheds Sutherland, Keen Insurance, McLays, Premier Forest Products and Wales & West Housing.
