This month is Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD) Awareness Month. COPD is a group of breathing conditions, including bronchitis and emphysema, that make it difficult for someone to breathe properly.
Here at City Hospice, we support lots of people with COPD on a weekly basis. Recently, our Occupational Therapist, Rachel, has set up the ‘Be Inspired’ clinic to help those who are struggling with the condition.
Be Inspired stands for:
Breathlessness Interventions & Self-Management Programme In Respiratory Difficulties
The clinic goes on for three weeks and looks to help people understand what’s going on and how to live with COPD.
Rachel covers topics such as:
- Lung function
- Breathing techniques
- Nutrition
- Relaxation
…And lets attendees know that psychological support and financial advice is available to them too.
Rachel says that the clinic has been a success and she’s proud of the people who’ve come along. “The patients have positively engaged in the self management process and the benefits of peer support. They report to have learnt from each other and I have certainly learnt from them”.
