It’s been a busy few months for City Hospice, with plenty of fantastic fundraising events this autumn.
From our staple calendar fixtures to debuting new events with resounding success, get the full rundown of what’s been happening this season.
The Sparkle Walk
A beloved feature in the City Hospice calendar is our Sparkle Walk. Each year we bring our community together for a 10km night-time walk through Llandaff and Whitchurch, as we allow the memories of loved ones to sparkle and shine through.
This was our fifth annual event, and the walk once again brought new and old faces together to celebrate the lives of those no longer with us, and spread their sparkle across Cardiff. Over 320 people registered to take part in The Sparkle Walk, collectively raising over £29,000 for the charity.
We are very grateful to NFU Mutual Newport for sponsoring this year’s walk, in recognition of the value and importance of specialist palliative and hospice care. The organisation has been supporting people, families and businesses for over 110 years with services such as financial planning, insurance and risk management.

Cardiff Half Marathon
54 runners entered the popular Cardiff Half Marathon race as part of ‘Team Hospice’ and together raised over £24,000 for City Hospice.
A lot of hard work and effort goes into preparing for a half marathon; we really appreciate the incredible dedication of every runner and the generosity of all those who donated.
It wasn’t just the runners on the course! Our team and volunteers were proudly supporting and encouraging our runners at our cheer stations dotted along the route.

Chair’s Lunch: leaders and legends
This year we launched our inaugural Chair’s Lunch event at the Parkgate Hotel in Cardiff to celebrate our 40th anniversary.
The event, kindly sponsored by Brewin Dolphin, was organised and hosted by City Hospice chair Michael Baker to provide the south Wales business community with an opportunity to hear unique leadership insights, learn more about the charity and enjoy a delicious three-course meal while doing so.
We were delighted to be joined by Claire Akers-Dyer who shared her family’s moving story, as well as hear from special guests Nigel Walker OBE and Sam Warburton OBE who were interviewed by the brilliant Deborah Thomas. The duo shared their experiences and thoughts on leadership on and off the rugby pitch, touching upon imposter syndrome and the importance of perspective during the Q&A.
The afternoon was a resounding success and received glowing feedback from the 230 attendees on the inspirational and moving talks given. We were delighted to see so many people come together to support City Hospice in what we hope will become a firm fixture in our calendar.

After such a successful few months of fundraising, alongside those who are taking part in our 40 Charity Challenge, we look forward to our upcoming events during our Light up a Life appeal including our remembrance service, art auction, Christmas concert and Jolly Jumpers.
