Kathrine has been part of City Hospice’s nursing team for over ten years. As a Clinical Nurse Specialist, she works in the community, enabling patients with terminal or life limiting illnesses to receive care in the comfort of their own homes.

Kathrine said: “We often care for patients over many months or years, becoming like part of the family. It never ceases to amaze me how lovely the people that we meet are. The patients and their families are so brave; it is an absolute privilege to care for them during an incredibly difficult time in their lives.

“I love being a nurse and part of the City Hospice team because I really feel that I am making a difference to people’s lives. As a specialist palliative care team, we are able to manage and alleviate complex symptoms and enable most people to stay at home at the end of their lives.”

A typical day of nursing begins at 8am for Kathrine, who also supports her colleagues as a team leader.

Kathrine said: “My priority each morning is to contact my most poorly patients to establish how they have been overnight and see if any further support that day is needed, scheduling extra house calls if necessary in addition to the patients booked into my diary.

“During a typical day, I spend several hours in the community caring for patients in their own homes. From symptom management to planning future care, supporting patients and their families is at the forefront.

“As a team leader of Clinical Nurse Specialists, I also spend time assisting my colleagues with any queries or concerns and knowing how important our care is, I am always willing to help those who need support.”

Donate a Day gives everyone the chance to donate or fundraise £150 which covers a day of nursing care by a City Hospice Clinical Nurse Specialist. Supporters can choose a date that’s special to them, such as an anniversary or birthday, to sponsor a nurse.

Kathrine said: “It’s really heartwarming to read the reasons why people Donate a Day and it means a lot to my colleagues and I that our specialist nursing care is appreciated. This campaign also helps raise essential funds for the hospice to enable our care to continue; it really makes a difference.”
