A Clinical Nurse Specialist with City Hospice for eight years, Allen supports patients and their families, reducing their stress and anxieties at a challenging time in their lives.
Allen said: “It’s a privilege to make a difference to patients and their families at one of the most difficult times of their lives and to do so in their own home.
“Adapting to different dynamics and family environments, we really get to know the patients and families we care for and their needs, helping them to feel comfortable. We take a holistic approach to the care of the family and not only provide clinical care but emotional support too.”
As well as being a team leader and mentor to other Clinical Nurse Specialists, Allen works with a multidisciplinary team to ensure that the best care can be provided to patients.
Allen said: “A typical day of nursing includes a mixture of home visits, supportive telephone calls, planning care for my patients and assisting my fellow team members. This often involves liaising with other healthcare professionals both internally and externally of City Hospice.
“We are a bridge and a link to other services such as GPs and this proactive approach helps us to get the right help and support for patients which is really rewarding.”
Donate a Day gives everyone the chance to donate or fundraise £150 which covers a day of nursing care by a City Hospice Clinical Nurse Specialist. Supporters can choose a date that’s special to them, such as an anniversary or birthday, to sponsor a nurse.
Allen said: “When our kind supporters Donate a Day of nursing care it means a lot to us as a team, knowing that we have the support of people in our community to help ensure we can continue to provide essential care at a time when people really need it. As a charity we are aware of the need to raise vital funds to support our ongoing work and Donate a Day really helps our fundraising efforts.”
