Nia’s first Sparkle Walk

This September, Nia will be taking part in her first Sparkle Walk after her mum, Bev, was sadly given 12 to 18 months to live in January 2025. Now, 20 months on, Bev continues to receive care and support from City Hospice, and Nia is hoping she will be able to walk alongside her family.

This year’s Sparkle Walk is taking place on Nia’s birthday, and she wanted to do something special and meaningful to give back to City Hospice for the support they give her mum.

Nia said:

“I’m beyond grateful for City Hospice. At times of distress and uncertainty, we’ve come away from appointments feeling comforted, reassured and supported.”

Alongside medical care, City Hospice has given Bev the opportunity to enjoy reflexology and take part in craft groups. The team also arranged a special Mother’s Day photoshoot for the family – something they say they will be forever grateful for.

Nia has previously taken part in charity walks for breast cancer charities, which she says have helped her feel like she is doing something during times when she has felt helpless.

She loves the idea of getting her children involved in the Sparkle Walk this year, so they can feel like they’re doing something to help their Nanny. When she realised the walk would fall on her birthday, it felt like it was meant to be.

“I’m looking forward to meeting other people and sharing stories. The children are also really excited about dressing up in their sparkles and lights.”

After using Bev’s 60th birthday as an opportunity to fundraise for City Hospice, Nia understands the importance of helping to raise vital funds so the charity can continue to provide support to people and families facing serious illness.

Having seen first-hand the difference City Hospice has made for her mum, she hopes to continue fundraising and supporting the charity.

Nia said: “If people were considering signing up to join the walk, I would tell them that they wouldn’t regret it. The positivity these events bring is incredible and you will meet people that are so inspiring.

“I just think it’s an amazing thing to turn a negative into a positive and get out and walk for your own mental health, to celebrate a loved one and help fundraise for a fantastic charity.”
