Mother and Son Duo Take on the Sahara Trek Challenge in Aid of City Hospice

At City Hospice, we are constantly moved by the kindness and dedication of our supporters. Our 2025 Sahara Trek Challenge is set to be one of those incredible journeys, and among our participants is a mother and son duo, Catherine and Alex.

Taking place on February 19th, this unforgettable long-weekend trek will lead #TeamCityHospice across the stunning and ever-changing landscape of one of the world’s most iconic deserts – the Sahara.

Catherine and her son, Alex, were motivated to take on the challenge as a way to give back to City Hospice after the charity provided care for their family.

Catherine shares:

“My family has experienced City Hospice’s support firsthand. The charity cared for my son’s stepdad, Steve, and the care we received was invaluable. When my mum lost her husband, Vittorio, her world stopped, but City Hospice became a lifeline for her through volunteering. The charity’s impact extends beyond medical help; she formed lifelong friendships that continue to support her.

As a family, we’ve faced loss more than once, but City Hospice showed us that there is light at the end of the tunnel. They’ve helped us become more comfortable with death, and for that, we will be forever grateful”.

When the Sahara Trek was announced, Catherine and Alex knew it was the perfect opportunity—not only to see one of the world’s most extraordinary regions but also to support a cause close to their hearts.

Catherine added:

“We both thought it sounded like a fantastic adventure. We needed to get fit, and having a goal like the Sahara Desert is so motivating. It’s also a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to experience such an incredible part of the world”.

In the lead-up to their trek, Catherine and Alex have planned a series of fundraising events, including a garden party with games, raffles, and wine, as well as a DJ event, enlisting the help of friends to create a fun and lively atmosphere. As autumn approaches, they’ll intensify their training, tackling local challenges such as walking the dunes at Merthyr Mawr and climbing Pen y Fan.

Mac Smith, Fundraising & Events Manager at City Hospice said,

“A huge thank you to Catherine and Alex for taking on this incredible challenge for City Hospice. It will be an unforgettable experience in memory of your loved ones, and every penny raised will help us continue to care for Cardiff. Best of luck on your adventure – we can’t wait to hear all about it!”
