Fae treks the Sahara in memory of Tim

After experiencing the care of City Hospice during one of the most difficult times of her life, supporter Fae decided to take on an extraordinary challenge to give something back.

In 2020, Fae’s partner Tim was diagnosed with aggressive lung cancer. After several treatments, it became clear that the cancer had spread too far and too quickly. From 2022 onwards, Fae and Tim were supported by the team at City Hospice.

Fae said: “They were always there at the end of the phone to reassure us or to help when we needed it. They supported us with end-of-life planning, which we almost certainly wouldn’t have got around to otherwise, and their counselling service was crucial for me. It was a place where I could let my guard down for a short time without judgement.”

When Tim passed away in April 2023, the support continued.

Fae added: “When Tim died they were there for me throughout. I will forever be grateful for everyone’s support, from the lovely reception volunteers to the nurses and counsellors.”

As her way of saying thank you, Fae decided to take on the Sahara Trek, raising vital funds for City Hospice.

The challenge also held special meaning for Fae. She and Tim had travelled to Morocco together in the past and had planned another trip to Marrakech in 2020 before the pandemic and Tim’s diagnosis changed their plans.

Fae told us: “Tim was a musician and had always wanted to experience the sounds of the bazaars and the medina and hear Sufi singing. When I saw the trek, it felt like the right challenge. By February, I found myself setting off from Gatwick with a group of strangers who quickly became an incredible team.”

Over four days, the group trekked across dunes and desert plains in intense heat. While the challenge pushed everyone to their limits, the experience also created powerful connections.

Fae said: “There were blisters, exhaustion and moments that were truly hard, but there was also laughter, powerful stories and friendships that will last a lifetime.

“Completing this journey has given me a real sense of accomplishment, and I’m so proud to have done it in support of City Hospice and the amazing work they do. Thank you to City Hospice for the opportunity to complete this life-changing challenge and for all the incredible work you do. You are absolute heroes.”

Through Fae’s incredible efforts, she has raised an amazing £3,000, helping the charity continue to provide specialist palliative care to patients and families across Cardiff.

Katie Robinson, Community Fundraiser at City Hospice, said:

“Thank you, Fae, for choosing to support City Hospice and for taking on such an incredible challenge in memory of Tim. The money you’ve raised will help us continue supporting patients and their families across Cardiff. We’re truly grateful for all the dedication and effort you’ve put in, and we’ve been so proud to follow your journey.”
