Two dedicated supporters, Caroline & Essex are taking on 60km this year to mark Caroline’s 60th birthday all in aid of City Hospice.

Caroline and her husband Essex have lived in Llandaff North for 25 years. Originally from Northen Ireland, Caroline works as a physiotherapist, while Essex, from Newport in Pembrokeshire, has a background in lifelong education. The couple have two sons in their 20s and a beautiful greyhound called Jilly.

To celebrate her 60th birthday this July, Caroline has set herself the ambitious challenge of completing six 10km races in different locations. Essex is taking up the challenge with her.

Caroline said,

“I’m not really a sporty person, so this is always a challenge. I go for a run now and then, usually with my friend. Last year, Essex and I entered the Cardiff Half Marathon, Essex did very well but unfortunately, I got an injury and was unable to reach my goal”.

Caroline added, “I could have just booked a nice holiday, but I thought, I can still aim for 10km, so why not six 10kms for 60 years?”

Determined to push herself, Caroline came up with the idea of running six 10km races in honour of her milestone. Caroline chose to support City Hospice after learning more about the charity’s work providing specialist care to patients with terminal illnesses and their families.

“I was aware that City Hospice provides a really important service, but we didn’t know a great deal more than that,” she said. “It has been great to visit and meet Katie from the team and find out more about what they do. My friend Cathy volunteers at the hospice, and I decided it would be a great cause to support with my 60k for 60 years challenge.”

Caroline has been training with the help of a supportive personal trainer, who has provided a plan to help her complete the challenge. Her first race took place at the Edinburgh Winter Warmer in February followed by the SPAR Craic St Patrick’s Day 10km in Belfast in March.

Caroline’s upcoming races include:

  • Falmouth 10k – May 11
  • Saucony London 10k – July 13
  • Cardiff 10k – September (date TBC)
  • Morun Cardiff – November (date TBC)

Katie Vaughan, Senior Community Fundraiser said,

“What a brilliant idea Caroline has come up with to commemorate her 60th birthday! They have got off to a great start with two winter runs already in the bag. We’re so grateful to Caroline and Essex for choosing to support City Hospice and are cheering them on the virtual sidelines.”
