Maureen and Rita talk to us about how their bereavements inspired them to volunteer.

Two years ago both our husbands were referred to City Hospice. The whole team were fantastic in the support they gave us and following our loss we both joined the bereavement group that meets at the hospice centre each week, where we met and made friends. When City Hospice started monthly drop in coffee mornings, we were approached to help and jumped at the chance to volunteer and give something back. We know exactly what the families in the group are going through, we hope we can be an example that there is hope on the other side and that there can be something positive after such sadness.

It’s also a huge help to us being able to give back, feeling like we have a purpose and are making a difference. We have become great friends and we’re able to support each other as there are of course still tough times.
