Health & Safety on the day

We take monitoring Health and Safety very seriously. We will have a competent guide at the front and rear of the group as you set off on each climb throughout the day, together with marshals posted along the route for support if needed. Brecon Mountain Rescue are also aware of the event in case of extreme emergencies.

You must attend the registration station after each climb so we can record completion for safety purposes. This is also your opportunity for a stop, refuel, and refill of water.

If you need additional items such as plasters etc then let us know at this station.

What do I need on the day?

Your registration includes a free City Hospice t-shirt.

Please check out our helpful guide here on things you may wish to bring along on the day to help keep you hydrated, fuelled and able to smash this challenge!

Weather planning

Please check out our weather planning guide here

To ensure a safe climb up Pen y Fan, prioritize weather awareness, proper clothing and equipment, and staying on marked paths, as advised by marshalls. Check the weather forecast, dress in layers, wear sturdy hiking boots, and carry plenty of water. Avoid straying from marked paths, especially near edges, and be mindful of changing conditions.

Detailed Safety Guidelines:

Check the weather: Pen y Fan is known for its rapidly changing weather conditions. Consult a specialist mountain weather forecast like MWIS or the Met Office for accurate predictions.

Dress in layers: Pack a base layer, a fleece, and a waterproof jacket and trousers, even in summer, as temperatures can drop quickly on the summit.

Wear proper footwear: Sturdy, well-gripped hiking boots with ankle support are essential for navigating the uneven and potentially slippery terrain.

Carry essential kit: Include a map and compass, even if you’re familiar with the route, a head torch with spare batteries, a whistle, a first aid kit, and plenty of food and water.

Stay on marked paths: Avoid shortcuts or straying near cliff edges, especially in poor visibility.

Be mindful of changing conditions: Carry waterproofs and be prepared for sudden changes in weather.

Keep dogs on leads: If you’re bringing a dog, keep it on a lead at all times, especially at the summit and near edges.

Be aware of your limits: Pace yourself and be prepared to turn back if conditions become too challenging.

Carry a fully charged phone: While not a primary navigation tool, a charged phone can be useful in emergencies.

Emergency: In the event of a true emergency or injury on the mountain, the Brecon Mountain Rescue team are first port of call for support. Please contact them by dialling 999. Emergency first aiders (volunteering and or staff of City Hospice) will support with any injury until their arrival.
