Complementary therapies are treatments that can be provided alongside conventional care to aid relaxation and improve your sense of wellbeing.

At City Hospice we offer complementary therapy treatments to patients, their families and carers, and those who have been bereaved. All therapists at City Hospice are qualified and have the experience to make any necessary adaptations to treatments to meet the needs of our patients.

Aromatherapy is the use of fragrant plant oils to support physical and emotional well-being.  Essential oil is extracted from many flowers or plants and can be used in massage or as an   inhalation to achieve a variety of therapeutic effects, such as relieving stress, relaxation and improving well-being. Aromatherapy massage is a gentle form of massage aimed at reducing    muscle tension and enhancing relaxation.

Touch is known to be a vital and essential form of communication, and massage can provide a safe and soothing treatment. All massage treatments are gentle and are aimed at relaxation, stress reduction and relieving tension.

Reflexology is based in the theory that there are specific points on the hands and feet that relate to areas and systems of the body. Applying gentle pressure with either the thumb or finger is thought to have an effect on the mind and body helping with relaxation, emotional, psychological and physical well-being.

Reflexology Lymph Drainage (RLD) is an adapted form of reflexology that has been shown to be beneficial in easing some of the symptoms associated with lymphoedema. (Please ask your therapist if this is available for you)

Aftercare Advice

Following your treatment, you may feel very relaxed.  Please take time to sit and acclimatise yourself before driving your car. It will be beneficial if you can try to make time for rest and relaxation following your treatment.

You may experience the need to use the toilet to pass water more frequently, therefore it is better to avoid drinks that contain caffeine e.g. coffee, and drink plenty of water to prevent you from becoming dehydrated.

Visiting Therapists

Throughout the year we are pleased to welcome students from the Complementary Healthcare Degree program at Cardiff Metropolitan University. The students are qualified therapists and hold level 5 qualifications in clinical reflexology, aromatherapy and holistic massage.  They visit City Hospice to offer treatments as part of the third year work-based placement module.
