The City Hospice Raft Race has become an annual fixture for supporters throughout the capital. Each team build a unique raft and raise essential funds for Cardiff’s local hospice, in the knowledge that their collective efforts will make a world of difference to the patients and families who we care for. This year’s Raft Race took place on Sunday 16th June 2019, and was again an exciting event, full of great fun, imaginative costumes and inspiring teams. One of this year’s teams, ‘The Cardiff Chiefs’ share their Raft Race story.

The Cardiff Chiefs are a mixed ability rugby club who provide rugby opportunities for those who cannot take part in the full game. These players can have a physical disability, learning difficulty, serious injury or just be new to the game. We run regular training sessions and endeavour to arrange fixtures against other teams who share a vision of making rugby all-inclusive.

“We were really looking forward to the Raft Race; it was really fun building our raft and the boys enjoyed every second of the event.

We think that the work City Hospice does is so incredible - The patients that City Hospice help are incredibly brave in facing their illness' head on, and the hospice's work helps them to retain some normality in their lives.

We looked forward to the teamwork and social aspect of the event. As a team, we worked together to build the raft, carry it from Llandaff RFC to the rowing club, and then to raced it against the high river. Furthermore, we were very excited to race against people who share our goal to raise money for such an amazing charity, and against people who we hope will become our friends for a while to come.

We couldn’t recommend this event enough; we have already started planning our raft design for next year.”

Daisy Magill, Fundraising Officer said: “We were so happy to welcome Cardiff Chiefs to the Raft Race for the first time; I can’t believe they carried their raft all the way from Llandaff RFC to the Rowing Club. It’s very rewarding to organise events like this and see the efforts teams put into their rafts and watching them enjoy the day together. Thank you to the Cardiff Chiefs team for supporting City Hospice".
