Young fundraiser Lyra Webb has reached a significant milestone, raising £2,000 for Cardiff charity City Hospice in memory of her Bamps.

Lyra, aged 10, began her fundraising journey in 2023 as a tribute to her grandfather John Bruno who received specialist palliative care from City Hospice in the comfort of his own home following a diagnosis of kidney cancer.

City Hospice is the only provider of home-based specialist palliative care in the capital. The charity provides care and services including welfare advice and complementary therapies to patients with terminal or life limiting illnesses, as well as bereavement support and counselling for the families of its patients.

In 2023, Lyra completed two demanding physical fundraising challenges to raise an impressive £1345. Her first challenge saw her complete 100km of walking, scooting and swimming in one month. Lyra then teamed up with Amy-Claire Lanman, a patient at City Hospice who has become a good friend of Lyra and her family, to climb Pen y Fan in the summer.

Lyra continued to fundraise in 2024 to celebrate the charity’s 40th anniversary. City Hospice was established in 1984 to provide community palliative care to the people of Cardiff. Over the four decades since its inception, the charity’s services have expanded to meet the needs of its patients, families and the wider community.

When City Hospice invited businesses to take part in the 40 Charity Challenge to mark the anniversary, Lyra decided to set herself her own 40 Charity Challenge: doing multiple challenges themed around the number 40 over four weeks.

Her creative fundraising, including tasting 40 different foods while blindfolded, has helped her raise a further £655 to achieve her goal of raising £2000. Lyra will be using £150 of her sponsorship to donate a day of nursing care for her friend Amy-Claire’s 30th birthday.

Katie Vaughan, Community Fundraising Coordinator at City Hospice, said: “Lyra is a true hospice hero and we congratulate her on achieving this incredible fundraising milestone!

“We have loved following Lyra’s journey and her determined, creative approach serves as an inspiration to fellow fundraisers. She has embodied courage and compassion in her challenges and her dedication to our cause ensures that more families in Cardiff can receive the same specialist care that her Bamps received.”
